Urdu is the Indo-Aryan language of South Asia, one of the 23 official languages of India, and the national language of Pakistan.
Urdu began to develop in northern India near Delhi about the 12th century. It was based on the vernacular language of Delhi and was strongly influenced by Arabic and Persian, as well as Turkish. During the 14th and 15th centuries, many poems and books began to be written in Urdu. Recently, Urdu has been associated mainly with Muslims on the Indian subcontinent, but there are many major works of Urdu literature written by Hindu and Sikh writers. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Urdu was chosen as the national language of the new world. Today Urdu is spoken in many countries around the world, including Britain, Canada, the USA, the Middle East, and India. In fact, more people speak Urdu in India than in Pakistan.
In addition to being spoken in India and Pakistan, Urdu is also spoken in South Asia, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal, as well as in the Middle East, Europe, the United States, and Canada. It is the first language of at least 60.5 million speakers, with some 40 million or more speaking as a second language. EDU411 Handouts pdf
Urdu is ranked second among the world’s languages after China. It is an accepted fact that UNESCO calls it “Hindustani”, which includes both Urdu and Hindi, but if Urdu and Hindi are combined, Urdu or Hindustani may be the second-largest language in the world in terms of a number of speakers.
Urdu is taught as a compulsory high school-level instruction in both English and Urdu school programs, which has produced millions of Urdu-speaking people whose second language is native to one of Pakistan’s languages - which has led to the emergence of vocabulary from different Pakistani languages. and some Urdu words are also included in the regional languages of Pakistan.
